Tell the Members of the City Council Housing Committee to Oppose Lifting the Ban on Rent Control
Chicago Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez is sponsoring a resolution in the Chicago City Council calling upon the Illinois General Assembly to lift the ban on rent control in Illinois. On Tuesday, April 15, the Chicago City Council Committee on Housing and Real Estate, which Sigcho-Lopez chairs, plans to vote on the resolution. If it passes out of committee, the full City Council will vote on the resolution as soon as this Wednesday.
Over the past several years, the Illinois General Assembly has considered legislation to lift the statewide ban on rent control. To date, due largely to the work of industry leaders, none of those efforts have succeeded. Though the Sigcho-Lopez “lift the ban” resolution is non-binding, a vote of the Chicago City Council to support lifting the ban on rent control would be a powerful tool that rent control advocates could use to advance their cause.
Fill out this form to tell the members of the City Council Housing Committee to vote NO on this detrimental resolution. You may use the form as provided or, to have the greatest impact, you can customize your message to let the committee members know that rent control is an awful idea, and that they should be focusing their attention on measures to increase the supply of housing, which is the only effective solution to keeping rents down.
